Review of the Optimus Black from LG by Keith Bates

The Optimus Black from LG is a modest smartphone, and despite not being loaded with the features and hardware of more expensive units, it still performs admirably. As you would expect from LG, the design is simple but sublime, a smooth all-black number with no protruding buttons and a good-sized display. Weighing just 111 grams, it's the lightest smartphone out there, and from a design point of view that's great, but it just feels a little insubstantial and a little too easy to drop.
Being a mid-range phone, this is no dual-core powerhouse, but the single core processor still performs pretty well. When launching apps, or browsing the web, the LG isn't amazingly fast but there isn't any noticeable lag between the launch and execution of a task. It's not carrying the latest version of Android either, but LG says this is easy to update, so isn't that much of an issue but is worth mentioning.
A 4-inch WVGA screen utilises NOVA technology, which LG says uses less power than AMOLED, and during outdoor use I found the screen to be bright and easily readable. However, the blacks aren't quite black enough and the whites are a little dull in comparison to the other screen technologies used by other smartphones.
The user-interface is as simple as the design, and unlike more expensive units, the homescreen isn't overloaded with branded widgets and apps, making it easier to find and use the functions you use the most. The Optimus has a neat little trick I've not seen elsewhere too, a 3D-motion gesture button that LG calls the G-key. The button works on its own or in combination with movements. For example, you can control the music player by pressing the G-key and tilting the phone this way and that, or you can use it to navigate through the 7 home-screens.
As is becoming standard on most handsets, the Optimus has both a front and back camera. The back camera is a decent 5 mega-pixel mid-range effort, neither the best nor the worst out there and the front camera is 2 mega-pixels, which again is pretty decent. It does take a pretty good photo, and the display copes with HD still images and video well.
In summary, this is a competent, mid-range smartphone, and although it doesn't match the hardware of its more expensive competitors, it does perform well. LG have produced a sleek, good-looking, easy to use phone, aimed at those that don't want to be weighed down with tons of features they won't use, and is probably the best middle of the road phone I've come across so far this year.
